From early recognized poets, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, to their heirs Robert Hayden, Gwendolyn Brooks and more recent poets; Imamu Baraka, Lucille Clifton, Nikki Giovanni and Rita Dove, this course will examine the voices of African American poets reflect issues of protest, injustice, identity, gender and what it means to be Black in America. Cultural influences influence such as jazz and dialect will be discussed.

The infamous 1919 Black Sox scandal is dramatized in the film, Eight Men Out. The movie tells the story, based on the book by Eliot Asinof, of the eight Chicago White Sox teammates accused of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cinncinati Reds in a gambling conspiracy. The film will be followed by an interview about that scandal and other baseball notoriety with Dan Schlossberg, prolific writer of baseball books.HIs latest book, "The New Baseball Bible" will be avaiable at a book signing after the discussion.
