The tradition of "sanctuary" for asylum seekers has roots in the ancient world, religious and secular.  This tradition was given new life in the 1980s by activists who were opposed to US foreign policy in Central America so helped undocumented refugees enter the country and make their way to Canada.  Though the "right to sanctuary" was struck down in the US court system in the '80s, there are currently hundreds of "sanctuary" cities and towns, colleges and universities across the US.  In this session, we'll discuss what "sanctuary" is and why it is such a compelling concept in our world today.
