Eastern Religions introduces students to the work of selected philosophers, such as Confucius, Lao Tzu, and the Buddha. The professor will describe the origins of Buddhism arising from the life story of the Buddha. We will analyze the content and meaning of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths in order to understand basic Buddhist teachings and the transformation of consciousness it recommends including meditation. We will look at the basic elements of traditional Taoist values, ideals, and ancient Chinese beliefs including Qi Gong, Yin and Yang. The course will discuss the focus and goals of Confucianism, especially in terms of the Five Great Relationships, the Confucian Virtues, and the notion of the "noble person."
